Hosting a Texas Hold'em Tournament for a Charity

| On November 1, 2003, Guardian Angels held the first ever Texas Hold'em event for a charity in Kentucky! Since the event was the first of its kind, there was no "yardstick" by which to anticipate attendance. |

Due, in part, to the wildly popular "World Series of Poker" Championships, over 200 people lined up to pay the $100 entry fee. However, only 13 tables had been rented and several unhappy players were either diverted to the blackjack tables or turned away. Consequently, the initial buy-in totaled $13,000 with additional re-buys netting $10,000 to $12,000. That's right: A first time event grossed $25,000 after turning some players away! | ||
| The consensus of the players was that Casino Entertainment not only provided superior equipment but a true Las Vegas experience. The nature of the poker player is to follow a series of events with the same supplier because of superior equipment and consistent quality. Events can run 4-6 hours or more. Sitting on metal folding chairs can become a painful experience. In addition, Casino Entertainment supplies regulation 102" tables (as opposed to the 84" 'intimates' provided by others). "bagged" buy-in chips so that no chip counting by the charity is
required.
There has been a plethora of imitations: cafeteria tables with metal folding chairs; smaller "intimate" tables. Hard chairs and cold tables don't enhance the gaming experience and invite players to re-buy and stay. Cutting costs by reducing the amount spent on "player comforts" is reflected in lost player participation. Reduced player participation results in reduced concession sales and other ancillary products such as pull-tabs. Kentucky charities have only two licenses per year. If an event is run poorly, they have wasted one of their licenses. If the event is run poorly, they are not likely to have "return customers" Each charity needs to be PROACTIVE in the venues they choose for the Special Limited Licenses" and to make sure that the vendor they choose will provide the quality of equipment that suits their event. |
